Teresa Farris - Fighting For The Music

Teresa Farris is no stranger to the tougher side of the music business.  Doors have been closed, people have said no and frustration has been her close companion.  When you have a voice like hers, though, you don’t give up without a fight, and Farris battles her obstacles because she knows she wants to sing for people.

Farris started loving music at a young age and grew up listening to powerful performers such as Elvis, Tammy Wynette and Michael Jackson.  Her biggest influence, however, came from her family in the hills of east Tennessee.  She spent many hours listening to music with her beloved grandmother.

After learning her first song at the age of eight, Farris just kept moving along until she started writing her own material.  Farris plays the drums and the keyboards along with working on her own songs.  She’s been a songwriter for about ten years now and usually works alone.

“I only write with a couple of people because I can’t write everyday like a lot of Nashville writers,” she explained.  “I can only write when I’m inspired.”

Farris sees the results of her inspired writing when she performs certain songs.  One of these songs, “Scars,” seems to influence her audiences each time she sings it.

“The song, “Scars,” is about the bad things we go through in life.  Every time I perform it, it brings people to tears and always touches someone deeply,” Farris related.

Throughout the years, she’s never given up, and she just finished recording a new EP while working on her biography.  In her biography, she hopes to highlight some of the struggles she’s been through in Nashville.

“My biggest obstacle has always been Music Row,” Farris said.  “I would have to say the struggle in this business has changed my life more than anything.  I have learned so much about people, and why they behave the way they do.”

Farris hopes her biography will give insight to the struggles musicians face and will help those who are interested in the Nashville music business.  The book is called Teresa’s Truth and will be released sometime in 2010.

Along with recording her new EP and writing her biography, Teresa became involved last year with the charity Soles for Souls in Nashville, so she keeps herself pretty busy.

Teresa Farris has come a long way from where she started, but she knows the journey is far from over.  Farris will keep on working hard and fighting for the music she loves. “My only goal is to be able to perform for people, and hope that I can, for a moment in time, make theirs a happy life.”
